Make-up goes pop!…Spring/Summer 2011 Make-up Trends
Spring is a fabulous time of the year to indulge in colour and this year is no exception when it comes to current make-up trends. The way to wear the look is simple with splashes of bold colour either on the lips or eyes. Although the 70’s inspired wide leg trousers and prints were strongest on the catwalks it was the 80’s inspired bold lips, or smoky eyes that caught our attention, models skin was matt and bronzed, combined with nail colours of all shades adding a fun element to the look.
Trends, Rules & Tips
Lips: bright and bold
The best way to apply lipstick with such a strong pigment is to always line your lips, but do it with a lighter colour, patting it down lightly with your finger to erase any harsh lines. You don’t want this liner to be clearly visible as a strong lip line isn’t part of this look but it will help you define your natural lip shape and achieve a clean shape to fill in. Alternatively you can use a lip pencil in a strong shade to line and fill your lips with colour and then use a clear gloss to bring that colour to life.
Base: natural and slightly bronzed
Stay away from heavy foundations as you won’t need them with this bold look, the skin is all about being fresh, natural and flawless. Select a base colour that is identical to you natural shade, as you should be aiming to enhance your natural skin colour and even out skin tone. Apply a few light sweeps of bronzer over the parts of your face that naturally catch the sun such as your forehead, cheeks and nose. Then finish the look by applying a coral pink or peach blusher, which will create a healthy and fresh appearance.
Eyes: bright blocked colour versus the smokey eye
Dior gave one of the best examples of this fun and fresh look, which can easily be worn in a both a day and evening environment, injecting colour and creativity into your look. Recognition must also go to the looks created at the Jason Wu and Derek Lam shows, where the use of metallic shades combined with golden tones created a real buzz and had a more adventurous and rebellious streak to it. Pair this with a feline flick of eye liner to finish off and you will be ready to go!
How to adopt the look for day wear?
If you work in a corporate office environment then we would not suggest you start your day with an application of bright green block eye shadow, but instead opt for the more natural version of the spring looks, via the use of neutral eye shadow shades, accompanied by bright coloured lips. Alternatively you could opt for the use of colour on the eye by applying a colourful liquid liner or pencil along the lash line, keeping the rest of the eye area natural in shade.
Always take a condensed version of your make-up bag with you to touch up during the day, and when you head out for evening cocktails with your colleagues or friends, re-apply your eye shadow with confidence, blocking the colour for a stronger look or opt for the smokey eye variation showing you know your trends!
Some of the key make-up brands worth visiting to try this look are MAC, Nars, Dior and Urban Decay.
